What to Expect During the Visit
Hospital notarizations at St. Joseph most commonly involve medical power of attorney, advance directives, financial POA, and HIPAA authorization forms. The process is the same as any hospital notarization β we come to the patient's room and handle everything bedside.
We verify each signer's identity using a valid government-issued photo ID, confirm they are signing voluntarily, and apply the notary seal. The patient must be alert, willing, and able to understand the document. If there is any doubt about the patient's capacity, consult with the care team before we arrive β the notary cannot assess or determine competency.
If your documents require witnesses and none are available at the hospital, we can provide them for an additional fee ($25 per witness). Do not count on hospital staff to serve as witnesses β most facilities do not allow it. Check with the attorney or party who prepared the documents to confirm whether witnesses are needed.
